40. What do you do with your trash in Afghanistan?
Believe it or not, the biggest issue lingering on my mind these days is not the deteriorating security situation, the upcoming parliamentary elections or how to not get kidnapped or killed on the way home from work but it's "what the hell do I do with my accumulating trash?"
In all the time I have lived in Afghanistan, I have had someone working for me that handles the chores around the house and manages things like taking out the trash. Well, for the first time ever, I find myself without a housekeeper and now I have no idea where to dump the trash. I am sure this seems silly to most of you because if you have seen any pictures of Kabul or visited here in the last couple of years, you would say, just dump it somewhere on the street like everyone else does but I just can't seem to get myself to do that. I walked around my entire block and did not find one trash dumpster. No wonder people dump their garbage all over the city.
I have to say though, some people have give me some creative suggestions on what I should do with it....
Bury it.
Throw it into General Dostum's backyard(He's my neighbor and a war lord from the north)
Bring it to work and leave it next to someone's office who I don't like.
Sell it.
Trade it in for some fresh produce.
Feed it to the hundreds of stray dogs roaming the streets.
Throw it into Kabul River
...and my favorite one of all... burn it and have a bonfire around it complete with BBQ kabobs and live Afghan music.
Ahh... the joys of living in Afghanistan.

Hahaha, that is a good question. I cannot remember what did we do when we used to live in Kabul. Of course in a war zone garbage bins cannot be put around the city. It will attract bombs. I am still wondering how does the city deals with it's waste. Enlighten us when you find a more elegant solution :-)
ReplyDeleteI bought a trash bin and am paying someone to take it away and make their own decision about which one of the methods above he wants to use to get rid of it ;-)
