I often get asked how living in Afghanistan is that different than living anywhere else in the world? Well, this morning, I came out of the shower and stepped into my favorite and only pair of flip flops that I own and got to my room to realize they were completely drenched. So I did what I so often do...I took them off and placed them on top of my little electric heater. I usually leave them on there for a few seconds which does the trick and they come out completely dry and warm to the touch.
So, this morning, after placing them on the heater, I proceeded to use the time to comb my hair. After fighting the horrendous tangles I get from the nasty water quality in this country, I looked up to find my entire room engulfed in smoke. For a split second, I did wonder, where is all this smoke coming from until I looked over and saw that whole pieces of my flip flops had turned into a slimy gel like substance and was dripping into the coils of the heater. I pulled them off to find them completely burnt. And this, my friends, is how living in Afghanistan is different than living anywhere else in the world.
